Synopsis
« First they came for the Communists, and I did not say a word—
because I was not a Communist;
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not say a word—
because I was not a Trade Unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak up—
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for the Catholics, and I did not speak up—
because I was not a Catholic;
Then they came for me—
and there was no one left to speak up for me. »
First they came… Poem by Pastor Martin Niemöller (Dachau – 1942)
Mr. Martin and his wife live in a middle-class apartment surrounded by “noticeable minority” neighbors, too noticeable for Mr. Martin who thinks “damarab” writes as a single word. From denunciation to cowardice, betrayal to collaboration, he will end up flushed down in some domestic Niagara Falls.
