“Avoir 20 ans dans les Aurès”
A feature film by René Vautier | 1972
The Algerian war from a soldier’s moral perspective in a film that barely made it past the censors! René Vautier’s documentary-style drama is not only anti-war but also unequivocally critical of how the French government handled the conflict. The French people, and particularly the French government, were not ready to come to terms with their colonial past until the 1970s. In 1972, the film received the International Film Critics Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
René Vautier presented the film at the 20th French Film Festival in Richmond, Virginia which marked his first visit to the United States.

“Hitchcock et la Nouvelle Vague”
A documentary by Jean-Jacques Bernard | 2012
Presented by Jean-Jacques Bernard at the University of Richmond & Virginia Commonwealth University 20th French Film Festival’s Special Symposium on French Film: Arts, Science and Technology at Work for Humanity in 2012. French New Wave directors Claude Chabrol, Jacques Rivette, Eric Rohmer, Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut became filmmakers after having been enthusiastic Alfred Hitchcock fans. Their approach to the “British master of Hollywood” was able to redefine the notion of “author (auteur)” in cinema. How did it nourish their personal growth in filmmaking during the 1950s?
Hitchcock and the New Wave goes to the sources themselves. Chabrol, Rivette, and Rohmer agreed to participate in Jean-Jacques Bernard’s quest for answers to this historic relationship between Hitchcock and these pillars of the Cahiers du cinéma and the French New Wave. Bernard offers us an invaluable documentary with insights, recollections and comments by Chabrol, Rivette and Rohmer as well as by Luc Moullet and Charles Bitsch, not to mention rare excerpts from hours of sound recordings between François Truffaut and Hitchcock himself.

“Un Soir au Club”
A feature film by Jean Achache | 2009
Jean Achache presented the US première of Un soir au club at the 21st French Film Festival in the historic cinema palace, The Byrd Theatre. Now distributed in the US on DVD with English subtitles by the Festival.
Simon Nardis, a former jazz pianist with an international reputation, has been leading a quiet life for ten years with his wife and family. But his life takes a whole new direction one night when he misses his train and passes by a jazz club located near the port of Brest. Deep down he has always known that for him life is only real when he is creating music. He finds himself face to face with the demons that it has taken him so much time to overcome: music, alcohol and doubts. He is hooked by the club’s atmosphere and his encounter with Debbie, the club owner. Simon wants life to make his decisions for him. That is exactly what is going to happen.
